2010 News

  • Happy New Year

As we said on Facebook, we wish all our friends, your friends, and those whom you would not call “friends”, we wish everyone   good dreams. For us a great dream (or dream understanding ) tells you how to bring your deepest self, your processmind into everyday life, moment by moment. In this coming year, we promise to suggest how your processmind connects not only to everyday life, and to the earth, but to the structure of the cosmos.

  • Gravity and Psychology

What falls most quickly, a heavy rock or little pebble? The answer from physics is both fall at the same rate because gravity (space-time) pulls every object in the same way. Nature also pulls each of us at the same rate. Each is drawn towards the infinite in the same way because the cosmos works on each of us similarly, though we each manifest it differently. From this viewpoint, no one is more spiritual , than the next.

  • Nov. 17  Facebook Comment on Organizations!

Most leaders think in terms of legal structures, money, social, +spiritual power. Or the earth is considered…but without a spirit. Yet small and immense groups are still human beings living on a mysterious earth! Remember dreaming and process awareness of roles. Quiet mystics are just as needed as powerful leaders.

  • Nov 3.Facebook Comment on Obama.

Hurrah!for US President Obama saying Democrats+Republicansmust find common ground to work together after elections dividedCongress. Now? Next step? Someone, anyone, anywhere, please, please BE THATCOMMON EARTH. Yes we can.

  • Oct 30 Comment on Deep Democracy

Deep Democracy for kids?? YES! Until now I have used worldwork’s philosophy and methods to focus on large organizational processes, social issues, political scenes etc. But in the link below, Amy Mindell, bless her heart+camera, caught me playing out Deep D. for kids. Hope you enjoy this 1min and 28 sec film.

Mindell’s Deep Democracy for Kids of all Ages http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDcM5KUTQf4 (Mindell’s 1988 Deep Democracy concept is about equal rights +awareness of feelings, history, and the unknown lying in the background. In this very simple video, the unknown in the background is portrayed in part by the figure with a green cap, playing historical memories.)

  • 4 Questions about the “Processmind

Lots of attention recently to Processmind’s publication!  However, Arny was especially inspired by the four quesions of interviewer, Mr. Tomasz Stawiszynski Read more here: ProcessMind Interview with Newsweek Poland’s Tomasz Stawiszynski

  • Worldwork Ideas in Canada’s Globe and Mail

Thanks to  Susan Kocen for pointing out the positive support for process oriented political ideas in the Canadian Newspaper, The Globe and Mail on October 11. “  Jonathan Garfinkel, the reviewer of Micah Toub’s “Growing up Jung” in speaking of Toub’s ideasspeaks encouragingly about worldwork. • Processwork in Newsweek

An interview about Arny’s development of process work will appear (this month) in Newsweek in Poland. Arny thought the interviewer, Mr. Tomasz Stawiszynski was especially gifted at bringing out the background of processwork. • Deep Democracy Institute’s New Programs

It’ s good to see the Deep D. Institute’s public letter saying…”we have new national and international certifications in Deep Democracy Leadership, DD Coaching, DD Group Facilitation, DD Organizational and  Business Development, and DD Conflict Resolution. For students who feel so inclined, there is also an additional year for a Deep Democracy Institute Certificate with Excellence.

Also new, is ….the Deep Democracy Diploma. ….a Worldwork Diploma, where students develop the same rigor, dedication and connection to a deeper learning process as the Process Work Diploma. The difference however is, that the content focus is more aimed at people working with the collective aspect of transformation. One such idea comes from a follower of Jung’s, Arnold Mindell. Toub’s parents were disciples of “Arny,” a guru-like figure in their hippie Jung world, but Arny’s theories are anything but flaky. “Every family has a culture,” Toub’s mother intones in Arny-speak, thus implying that “the terrorist in the family” is the marginalized one, the one who goes against a family’s values, whatever they may be. Arny, according to Toub, doesn’t only apply this theory to family dynamics, but has worked in international conflict resolution as well (how successful Arny has been in this role, Toub does not say). Toub sums up Arny’s position:

“The very existence of the terrorist comes about because certain qualities are repressed from the mainstream. … Conflict arises in groups … from a need to shift the culture in a direction that is more inclusive and whole. Both the country and the family need to figure out how to integrate the terrorist’s qualities and attitudes into the mainstream culture to make the terrorist role unnecessary.”

While such a tactic may seem daunting, if not insightful, it warrants consideration in light of our current and largely unsuccessful global war on terror. On a smaller scale, it has relevant consequences for resolving family disputes.

  • A Mosque, Near Ground Zero in New York?

Arny asks on his Facebook pages: “A new Mosque near Ground Zero in New York City? A politician asked my view. Yes! I’m totally with Obama on that. But I also said we all need a deeper democracy … elders who feel into+understand BOTH sides, who support relationships +not just this or that group. Otherwise, group battles lead to ongoing war.Can a leader do that? What do  you think?”

These 2 questions created an amazing dialogue…for group process facilitators to learn from: see: last week of August at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Arnold-Mindell/116357551712368?ref=ts

  • Round-the-World: Processwork Community Class.

What a wonderful experiment we created on May 28th together with people from all over the world. With audio and streaming video (sometimes failing yet) connecting us to twenty seven centers (and several hundred people) around our little planet, we explored aspects of the processwork community; its present Tao (in terms of who was chosen by the pen around the world to represent the issues of pw community) and “Future TAO” using divination procedures, and processwork tools. The Tao of the moment was “coming from the inside out”, and the Tao of the future was “coming from the inside out into the world to make necessary changes there.”

The important aspect of all this for us was that the center of process work resides with what everyone is doing in their own home town, in their dreams and everyday lives. Processwork community includes institutes, programs, individuals, hermits, people who disagree and support what is know about process theory and practice!

  • Japan and the 2nd Training

Wow. What a pleasure seeing and working with our Japanese friends in the 2nd Training and Supervision seminars in Tokyo-Asakusa. It was a pleasure to see our Processmind ideas connect to indigenous Japanese ideas, and how they sparked fascinating links between processwork and various Buddhist traditions. We look forwards to next year integrating processwork and spiritual traditions into theory and practice to help with Asian worldwork issues.

Thanks to  Chikako and Yukio Fujimi,  and the processwork center and diplomates in Tokyo for helping the seminars there to occur.

  • Mexico City, London, Tokyo

Mexico. Difficult news from Mexico these days might blind the world to the incredible powers of the people. The hundreds of folks we met there interested in facilitating their own and others’ processes were as gifted or more so than any we have seen on this earth. Many of those people were close to their own Earth, able to temporarily drop everyday consciousness and use their deepest experiences to help all. Thanks to Lety Mendoza and the strong processwork group there for creating a wonderful event.

London. Oh dear London, the volcanic ash erupting into the air made it impossible for us (and others) to get to the UK this year. Yet that Icelandic volcano supported our main point: Bring out your deepest self, and let it change the world, reduce your self identification to know you are the other.  We were the “other”, drifting amidst thousands at airports…remembering life is not always in our hands….Thanks David Clark for all your organizational care.

Tokyo. We are close to you now looking forwards to sharing ideas about the “2nd Training”, shamanism, bodywork, interpersonal and world processes.

We are happy to see processwork in Prague! See http://www.processwork.cz/kontakt.html

  • Yokut’s Prayer

As we travel to work around the world at different places, we remember the earth we are speaking about…and in particular a Native American prayer from the Northern Californian-Pacific coastal groups you see below:

YOKUTS PRAYER

My words are tied in one

With the great mountains,

With the great rocks,

With the great trees,

In one with my body

And my heart.

Do you all help me

…..

And you, Day!

And you, Night!

All of you

See me

One with this world!

  • SUSAN BARTON on St Patrick’s Day

Gerry Forde from New Zealand wrote to us on March 17, 2010;

“To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, here’s a column I wrote for The Southland Times!

St Patrick’s Day Miracle by Gerry Ford

Personal memories of loved ones with cancer flooded over me as I sat with thirty others waiting for process psychology founder Arny Mindell, to Skype a woman with terminal cancer.

Her living face appeared on the big screen in front of us, pale and weary.

“The diagnosis is not the person,” Arny had said earlier.

Still the atmosphere of death touched us all. The connection faltered. “I can’t see or hear you,” said the woman.

She was for flagging it but Mindell wouldn’t hear of it. Afterwards he explained: “Her doctors have given up on her and she is in danger of giving up on herself. I was never going to give up.”

The connection restored I wondered how this little man who was famous for communicating with people in comas, would approach the woman who now had her head in her hands. He asked about her medication and health. She answered then said, “It’s sad but who cares?”

As she said this she raised a hand and the fingers were quivering. This was Mindell’s lead: “I like what your fingers are doing.”

She hadn’t noticed. “What does it feel like when your fingers move like that?” he asked.

“Freedom,” she replied.

“Oh, crazy freedom!” laughed Mindell. And he was right because immediately she was smiling and throwing her head back.

“Tell me,” he said, “if you could do one crazy thing right now, what would it be?”

“Sing an Irish song at the top of my lungs!”

“So sing!” laughed Arny.

“I don’t know any Irish songs!” she laughed.

“Then how about we sing you one?”

“That would be amazing!” she grinned.

Someone started Danny Boy and the woman’s face lit up. She was laughing and clapping. The singer faltered and I fed her the words and we sang some more.

At the end, Arny said to the woman. “Yeh, you have some sad stuff to face but you also have some crazy things to do.”

She was full of joy, gratitude and plans, crazy plans.

Mindell had helped her to that point within thirty minutes simply by unfolding the significance of her quivering fingers. I left the room with my heart brimming, buoyed up to do some living of my own. “

  • SHAMAN’S ALLY

We were touched and impressed to see Beverley A’Court’s paintings, one which she said was inspired by Arny’s book, the Shaman’s Body. Thank you Beverley! See more of her good work at

  • 2nd TRAINING COMMUNITY.

We were excited by our 2nd training seminar in Yachats for facilitators within and outside the processwork community. Now, even before working in Mexico, the UK, and Japan, we want to begin creating a community of leaders and facilitators from all professions to make this planet a home we can be proud of.

  • FACEBOOK

Amy and Arny got busy on Facebook, connecting with others about “Making this planet a home, we can all be proud of.” If you get on Facebook, you can connect with us there as well as here on this website.  See for example arny at

After an exciting semin on 2nd training, an advanced fac sem getting to the power of what “guides us”, we want to create a community of leaders and facilitators to make this planet a home we can be proud of

Jan 16; Everyone has their own special way of helping out in tough times such as the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Prayer—any method, any spiritual tradition, any religion…

Hands on Help, or else, send food, clothes, money+love.

Update and use trauma work methods–any school’s methods, anytime.

At home, and eventually in Haiti; Do large group open forums on the issues. (health/illness wealth/poverty, racism etc)

Remember trouble is not just there, but “here” too; we are all frail beings.

And at one time or another, we can all be “earthquakes”.

Awareness of all these things can help. And, everything works best if it comes from your deepest self.

Helicopter Update !: we were happy to hear that a section of the US Military used a suggestion of ours to put loudspeakers at the bottom of their helicopters. Then –to avoid fighting and killing over food–suggest to the people on the ground that we understand it is hard to be hungry, and natural to be panicked and fight about food,  but it costs energy to fight and makes people hungrier. The response on the ground was wonderful. No more fighting for food! Instead, the strongest people got the food first and gave it to the weakest at the outskirts of the circle. Wonderful Haitian peoples!

Around the turn of the year, Arny had one of the most wonderful interviews he can remember– with Newsweek. We shall share more details when the article appears.
